RIZKI RESA UTAMA (OQ) – SHALL WE CROSS THIS RIVER?

RIZKI RESA UTAMA (OQ)

Rizki Resa Utama(OQ)’s upbringing in Indonesia and experiences of living and working was an artist in Germany as a foreigner influence his practice to work creatively with questions of distance, time and space. He addresses not only issues of alienation but representations and prejudices which he has experienced himself- in both Indonesia and Germany. The complexity of communication and its medium influences his work profoundly. His artistic research offers an opportunity to open up a space to deal with issues of representation and ‘otherness’, which should challenge the system of how different cultures, or the so called ‘others’, are represented by mass media and addressed to our collective consciousness.

His works are focused on the social norms that are constructed through inclusions and exclusions produced by mass media. Formal decisions, formal presences and formal absences produce deeper meanings and play a big role in a wider context. When images and facts are missing or left out of a public debate, it points to larger political and social absences. Authorities, governments and institutions control the production of images in order to generate certain meanings. Through popular media, the internet and other digital formats, these images are continuously circulating and repeating, while they open up potential to construct new meanings at the same time.

His work is an investigation of the making of values and roles, which drive the interaction between individuals in a social group. Within his work, he is interested in exploring the question of how roles are made in today’s society and the extent to which it’s individuals summit to these roles when it comes to fulfilling their duties and desires. The strategy involves using repetition, stereotypes and reenactments to open up a transparent space where production of certain images and their social circumstances are restaged and revealed simultaneously.  By looking at the processes of what happens ‘behinds the scenes’, one could understand more what happens ‘on stage.’
